Protocol against TCA and other haloanisoles

The cooperage has developed and instituted extensive internal procedures to fight against any contamination from TCA and the other haloanisoles.

Prevention

At the level of our oak suppliers

  • Our suppliers do not sprinkle the wood (in order to prevent contamination in TCA by the water pipelines).
  • The staves delivered to the cooperage are stored on pallets intended exclusively for this use.

At the Cooperage

On the staves yard
  • The staves are dried on pallets exclusively intended for this use.
  • The staves are 100% air dried, without sprinkling, nor immersion in water (in order to prevent contamination in TCA by the water pipelines).
In the factory
  • The internal specifications of the cooperage prohibit any use of chlorinated products for cleaning or any other use (in order to eliminate any source of haloanisols or halophenols).
  • The heating system for the buildings at the Damy cooperage is powered by a boiler, which burns oak exclusively sourced from the cooperage (no coal, no fuel, etc.). The boiler is outside of the factory.
  • 100% of the water used in all operations in the cooperage is continually treated through a filter (in order to prevent any contamination in TCA by the water pipelines).
  • The cardboard packaging is of natural color. It has not been chemically cleared with a chlorinated product. They are certified by the supplier as exempt from Bisphénol A, from Octylphénol and Nonylphénol.
At the toasting
  • The bending of the barrels is exclusively realized with fire, without water nor vapor.
  • The wood burned to “feed the fire” during the toasting is the same as that used for the barrels. It is 100% sourced from pieces of staves from the cooperage.

At the storage
  • The containers used to deliver the barrels are complete containers, containing only barrels from the cooperage.
  • Each container is inspected visually, particularly the wooden floor. The floor must be in perfect state: tight, clean, dry and without odor. If not, the “bad” container is changed.
  • The floors of the containers can be protected by an aluminum liner, which isolates the barrels from the ground of the container (this is an additional option of protection that the customer pays).
